3D Mammography

What is a 3D Mammogram?

Mammography has gone a step further with the use of 3D Mammograms. 3D Mammograms, also known as tomosynthesis or “tomo”, use the same X-ray technology as 2D however, the advanced technology of the 3D takes multiple images of the breast tissue to recreate a 3-dimensional picture of the breast. These multiple images of breast tissue slices give Radiologists a clearer image and makes it easier to detect breast cancer.

While the ACS and ACR recommend that women age 40 and older get annual Mammograms, the National Cancer Institute says women who are at increased risk due to a genetic history of breast cancer, or who have had breast cancer, may need to get mammograms at an earlier age.

Uses for 3D Mammogram

3D Mammography is nationally recognized as the screening tool of choice by the American College of Radiology. The exam is used as a breast cancer screening test to look for breast cancer. Any woman who needs breast screening should consider 3D Mammography. Women with dense breast tissue may benefit because it provides a clearer picture than traditional digital mammography. Using 3D Mammography makes it easier to catch breast cancer early. It also helps catch more cancers and reduces the chance of doctors seeing a false positive as the images are much clearer.

The entire exam takes about 10 to 15 minutes. UCI provides mammo pads for a softer, more comfortable, mammogram experience.
