HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR ULTRASOUND

 

ABDOMEN / GALLBLADDER ULTRASOUND

Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. Anything you eat or drink may make it impossible for the technologist to provide your physician with the information he/she needs to make a proper diagnosis.

If you have medication that can not wait until after your procedure, take with the least amount of water possible

ARTERIAL DOPPLER OF THE UPPER EXTREMITIES

No prep is needed for this procedure.

ARTERIAL DOPPLER OF THE LOWER EXTREMITIES

Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. Anything you eat or drink may make it impossible for the technologist to provide your physician with the information he/she needs to make a proper diagnosis.
If you have medication that can not wait until after your exam, take with the least amount of water possible.

AORTA ULTRASOUND

BLADDER ULTRASOUND

Drink 32 ounces of water beginning an hour and a half before your appointment time and hold. You should finish your water before arriving at the facility to ensure you are ready for your procedure. Failure to fill your bladder may make it impossible for the technologist to provide your physician with the information he/she needs to make a proper diagnosis

BREAST ULTRASOUND

No prep is needed for this procedure.

CAROTID ULTRASOUND

Please do not wear jewelry around your neck to your procedure.

Wear a shirt with a low neckline to your procedure..

ECHOCARDIOGRAM

No prep is needed for this procedure.

ECHOCARDIOGRAM, STRESS

You may have only a light meal prior to your procedure.  This will reduce the risk of stress (exercise) induced nausea after a heavy meal.

Do not drink or eat anything containing caffeine for 12 hours prior t your procedure. This includes decaf coffee (contains a small amount of caffeine)
Refrain from smoking for 12 hours prior to your procedure.
Wear walking or running shoes and comfortable clothing appropriate for exercise to your procedure.

HYSTEROSONOGRAM

Drink 32 ounces of water beginning an hour and a half before your appointment time and hold. You should finish your water before arriving at the facility to ensure you are ready for your procedure. Failure to fill your bladder may make it impossible for the technologist to provide your physician with the information he/she needs to make a proper diagnosis.

INGUINAL / GROIN ULTRASOUND

No prep is needed for this procedure.

KIDNEY ULTRASOUND

No prep is needed for this procedure.
If your physician has ordered a kidney and bladder ultrasound please see bladder ultrasound for prep.

OBSTETRICAL (OB) ULTRASOUND

PELVIC ULTRASOUND

PROSTATE ULTRASOUND, TRANSRECTAL

You will need to purchase a Fleets enema and use 2 to 4 hours prior to your procedure. Follow the instructions on the package for proper usage.

RENAL ARTERY DUPLEX ULTRASOUND

Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. Anything you eat or drink may make it impossible for the technologist to provide your physician with the information he/she needs to make a proper diagnosis..

SOFT TISSUE / SOFT TISSUE NECK ULTRASOUND

No prep is needed for this procedure.

STROKE SCREENING

Please do not wear jewelry around your neck to your procedure.
Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 to 8 hours before your procedure.
Wear a shirt with a low neckline and short sleeves or sleeves that can easily be pushed up.
Wear shorts or pants with legs that can easily be pushed up.

TESTICULAR ULTRASOUND

No prep is needed for this procedure.

THYROID ULTRASOUND

Please do not wear jewelry around your neck to your procedure.
Wear a shirt with a low neckline to your procedure.

VENOUS DOPPLER OF THE UPPER OR LOWER EXTREMITIES

No prep is needed for these procedures.

Other Prep Instructions

Upper GI – Barium Swallow – Small Bowel Series

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight

Digital Mammogram

No powders, perfumes or deodorants.

Dexa / Bone Density

No prep.

Nuclear Medicine

  • Bone Scan – No prep
  • Hida / Renal / Muga Scan – nothing to eat or drink after midnight
  • Gastric Emptying – nothing to eat or drink after midnight or 4 hrs. prior to exam
  • Cardiac Stress test - Do not take PM (evening) DOSE OF Blood Pressure medication that contains Beta or Calcium Channel Blockers if scheduled in the morning. Do not take AM (morning) DOSE of Blood Pressure medication that contains Beta or Calcium channel Blockers if scheduled in the afternoon.
  • Cardiac Stress test / Chemical induced - Light meal; No caffeine or decaf drinks; No smoking 12 hours before exam. Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers.
  • An isotope is special ordered for your test. If you need to reschedule your appointment please call us 24 hours in advance. This will avoid you incurring a costs for the isotope.

CAT Scan *some studies may require a Creatinine prior to study being performed. Check with the facility by calling 726-3800.

  • Abdomen – Pelvic with IV contrast – nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. 1-2 bottles of C-Scan drinks
  • Chest with IV contrast – nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.
  • Brain with IV contrast – nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.
  • Neck Soft Tissue with IV contrast – nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam
  • NON - CONTRAST STUDIES = Spine – Extremity – Pelvic Bone – Facial Bones – Sinus – NO PREP

Special Procedures

Arthrogram – Myelogram – HSG – VCUG – IVP - Please call facility for prep instructions.

MRI *some studies may require a Creatinine prior to study being performed. Check with the facility by calling 726-3800.

  • Abdomen / Kidney – nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam
  • Pelvis - nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam
  • All other MRI studies do not require any prep.
