Mammography has taken one step further with the use of Digital Mammogramphy. With the full field nature of the digital technology, images appear on a monitor within seconds, eliminating the wait time for film to develop. The images involve a greater level of contrast allowing for potential areas of concern to be seen more readily by the radiologist. The radiologist has many tools to manipulate the computer images resulting in a better diagnosis.
While the ACS and ACR recommend that women aged 40 and older get annual mammograms, the National Cancer Institute says women who are at increased risk due to a genetic history of breast cancer, or who have had breast cancer, may need to get mammograms at an earlier age.
The entire exam takes about 10 to 15 minutes. UCI provides mammo pads for a softer, more comfortable mammogram experience. Do not use deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion under your arms or near your breasts on the day of your mammogram.
Digital Mammography is Nationally recognized as the screening tool of choice.
Please notify a member of UCI's staff if there is a chance you may be pregnant!
